AWARD OF THE AIR MEDAL FOR HEROISM

The following award is announced.

BACKES, ROGER G.   US********   SSAN: ***-**-****   SPECIALIST FOUR USA
116th Aslt Hel Co, APO 96353

Awarded: Air Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster) with "V" Device for Valor

Date action: 9 August 1968
Theater: Republic of Vietnam

Reason: For heroism while engaged in aerial flight in connection with military operations against a hostile force: Specialist Four Backes distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as crew chief on an armed helicopter in support of friendly infantry.

Several insertions of troops had been made and the flight came under intense enemy fire. Specialist Four Backes immediately assisted his aircraft commander in pinpointing the enemy positions by leaning far out of the aircraft in order to accurately suppress those positions. On each insertion, the flight came under fire and he continually laid down a heavy base of fire.

At this time, the gunships were called on to assist in a medical evacuation attempt. Again making low passes over the enemy positions, Specialist Four Backes leaned far out of the aircraft placing his fire directly on the enemy. He displayed true professionalism while performing his duties and an extreme amount of courage throughout the operation. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Authority: By direction of the President under the provisions of Executive Order 9158, 11 May 1942 as amended by Executive Order 9242-A, 11 September 1942 and USARV Regulation 672-1 dated 21 February 1968.
